A newspaper concept exploring “Skiing and Mountain Living through an Art Historical Framework”—A platform to share and discuss the design, art, architecture, fashion, photography, cinematography, etc. that make up the 77mm perspective.
Inspired in part by Art Critic/Philosopher Arther Danto’s definition of Art:
“Something is a work of art if and only if it has a subject about which it projects some attitude or point of view (has a style) by means of rhetorical ellipsis (usually metaphorical) which ellipsis engages audience participation in filling in what is missing, and where the work in question and the interpretations thereof require an art historical context.”
Let's break this down. For Skiing and Mountain Living to be "art" it has to
(1) In our case, the "subject" about which we'll express a perspective, is the cultural zeitgeist. That will include but is not limited to, art, design, architecture, typography, fashion, sport, travel, manufacturing, infrastructure, transportation, etc. (2) The style of the aforementioned perspective expression will be established by the unique combination of themes found in Skiing with themes in other genres. This collaborative, dialogic, discovery-focused approach to style will (3) provide the rhetorical ellipse (metaphorical gap to be filled) that encourages community participation. (4) By researching and cataloging how the themes in Skiing have historically interacted with the zeitgeist, we'll better understand how Skiing currently fits in the cultural narrative. With a clearer, contextual understanding of where Skiing culture is now, we can begin to effectively subvert and expand the presuppositions that have historically pigeonholed the Skiing milieu.
This research and cataloging of Skiing's interaction with the cultural zeitgeist will be done in two main categories of articles—Theory and News. 'Theory' holds the foundational ideas that define our perspective and style. 'News' is the outcome of applying that perspective to the cultural zeitgeist. Touching on themes such as art, design, architecture, typography, fashion, sport, travel, manufacturing, infrastructure, and transportation—as they pertain to, and interact with, Skiing and Mountain Living.
Simply said, this is Skiing's Art History Newspaper. A place for research, op-eds, reviews, and editorials about the world of Skiing interacting with culture at large.
